HomeMemories of Times Past
I was in 2/50 from June 1961 to November 1962, serving as a platoon leader and company XO in A Company. Company commanders were Dick Schott (who was killed in Vietnam) and Pat Lufburrow. First sergeant was the fabulous Ralph "Hoss" Timberman. I was reassigned to HQ 4th AD in Goeppingen where I remained until December 1964.

I've been back to Erlangen and Dechsendorf, where we lived before getting on-base housing, a few times, most recently in December 2006. Ferris Barracks is now almost unrecognizable, with Siemens, portions of the university hospital, and other enterprises now dominating the area. The 50th's buildings no longer exist, although many of the low brick structures that housed, inter alia, the commissary remain.

I will always have fond memories of my time in Erlangen and the 50th. It was the last time that many of us had a stabilized tour with our families in a unit before Vietman forever changed Army life.
